Why Do Lawyers And Judges In Nigeria Wear White Wigs? Is It Not Time We Drop It Or At Least Replace It?

I have seen this a lot, and it’s honestly funny and weird at the same time.
Why do people in the judiciary of Nigeria still wear white wigs? It has no symbolic meaning.
It was a fashion statement in Victorian times and a way for the British not to have to bother with their hair. Seeing it still being around today is puzzling.
Does it have a particular function in Nigerian law? Is it not time we drop it or at least replace it with a black wig since our hair as black people is BLACK!

Those wigs are so bleeping ugly. Omo, the fashions in this country shd change. And I'm not saying this as for it to be too much, but let the uniforms of people in these areas (judiciary, executive, legislative, and anything that represents us internationally) not only be practical but also distance us from the British while also being acceptable and respectable looking. I'm not saying they shd be traditional, but for God's sake, I think it's time to update that wardrobe.

No apparent function. I feel they wear it to stand out, as you’d easily guess anyone wearing a reflective cloth and helmet to be an engineer.

It's a tradition carried over from British colonialism. Lawyers in Hong Kong, another former British colony, also wear white wigs.

Colonialism still has a fist jammed and sunflowered in the throat of Nigeria

This question gets asked so many times. The simple answer is Its what colonial British lawyers wore.

Is it any more weird, funny, or puzzling than the entire planet - including Nigerians - hanging a brightly colored strip of cloth around their neck when they want to be viewed as severe or trustworthy by others?
I mean, you do it too. And it has no function other than to overheat and choke you.
Regarding the wigs, they are an artifact that should send you on some research to understand the national legal system, its historical origins, and the English colonial system which invaded the country occupied it, and imported its legal code, legal structures, and the court system, in place of a wide variety of local rulers and local customs and formalities regarding the adjudication of disputes. You may at the same time reflect on the fact it, like the rest of national formalities, are today conducted in the… English language. That, too, could be considered bizarre.
