Who is your most outstanding contemporary Nigerian musician today?

Yes, contemporary, so I will exclude Fela Kuti(GOAT), 2face Idibia(Can be considered another GOAT), and other great musicians like King Sunny Ade.

Afrobeats is now becoming a global genre, and the American Music Awards recently added Afrobeats as a category in the award show. Grammy will also create a new variety of categories for Afrobeats soon.

So let us look back at the last decade or maybe five years and select who is your most outstanding musician from the list below.

Wizkid don tey for this game, and he has been remarkably consistent. From 'Holla At Your Boy' to 'Made in Lagos,' he has continued to make good music for his loyal fans. Now known as Starboy, he started his music career early.

His collaboration with Beyoncé on the single "Brown Skin Girl" reached number one on the World Digital Song Sales Chart and gave him a Grammy award. So he deserves to get the greatest. His song "Essence," released from the album, Made In Lagos, where he featured the rising artiste, Tems, became the first Nigerian song to chart on Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top 10 when it was remixed with Justin Bieber. Wizkid was the most streamed Nigerian artiste on Spotify. He is undoubtedly one of the most excellent musicians of all time.

My pick is Burna Boy! The giant of Africa. The Odogwu singer released his fifth studio album, Twice as Tall, 2020, Which was nominated for the same category at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, making him the first Nigerian artiste to win back-to-back nominations at the Grammys. And he was then winning the Grammy. He will be ranked like Fela by future generations.

Burna wouldn’t have seen it coming as he had become internationally entrenched in the music world, referring to his late recognition at the start of his music career. Burna boy has collaborated with many music artists worldwide, his life performances on any stage are like WOW, and he has kept the pace of best representing the face of Nigeria in the music world.

Burna is good but I picked Rema. Rema got huge potential and he needs to fusion some of that Fela's vibe into his style and performances. And that can make him bigger and more modern than Burna Boy. I need Rema as the first Afrobeats artist that would perm at the Grammys.

My pick is Davido. Davido, aka OBO, Omo Baba Olowo, is original with original African content. He sings it as any average Nigerian does without trying to westernize his music-making approach.
