The people of Ogu kingdom in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area of Rivers State celebrated the annual Iria festival, an ancient ceremony to welcome young female virgins into womanhood.

During the ceremony held on Saturday, December 3, 2022, the young girls were given certificates by the elders and chiefs of the town for passing a test.

According to Niger Delta Insider, to pass the test, the girls must first be virgins which women of the town will confirm.

The young girls are then kept in a room where they will be fed and groomed before the ceremony.

After passing through this process, the qualified girls are given certificates showing they are now adults ready for marriage.

This ceremony is said to date back to the 17th century.

Wowww. Applaudable. God bless them. What about the men? I hope they, too, are encouraged to keep their virginity. I'm not too fond of cultural practices that tell women to uphold morals while men are left as free, immoral agents. It's an oppressive culture. I am not a promiscuous woman. I believe in no sex before marriage for both genders, and I'm keeping myself. But what's suitable for one is good for all.

Why we dey like this? Aren't there more important things? Virgins? I don't care about this. So irrelevant! The other day some rich twat was criticizing men for not having more than one wife. Our priorities just dey upside down.

Ignorance is a disease. They just dedicated you, girls, to an idol.

Many of them have lost their virginity for useless reasons. Virginity is the right way to go. If you abuse women that are still virgins, carry your tears abeg. GOD bless women who are VIRGINS and those who are not virgins. Carry your wahala comot abeg. We don't rate you at all.

What's going on here???? So only three virgins of marriageable age in the town? I hope they didn't circumcise them.

Disgusting! Now Ned Nwoko, after being with countless women, will marry one of them as his 8th wife. Shame!

It's all good. Cultures and traditions must be respected.
