People Said I Would Not Be Promoted Because I'm Black, A Woman, And An Immigrant - A Nigerian Lady, Celebrates As She Becomes Branch Manager Of Canada's Leading Bank.

A Nigerian woman, Patience Adesuwa Ajao is celebrating after being promoted to the Branch Manager of a leading bank in Canada.

Taking to Facebook on Saturday, November 12, Mrs. Ajao recalled how people said she would never be promoted when she was employed as a Customer Service Representative with the bank eight years ago.

"Upon relocating to Canada eight years ago, I was told to abandon all thoughts of building a career and survive. A few months later, I accepted the Customer Service Representative role with one of Canada's top five Banks," she wrote.

Talks in my ears sounded like: you will not get promoted, you will be a teller for life, remember you are black, a woman and an immigrant from Nigeria, three strikes against you. Forging on, I moved through four roles: Financial Services Representative, Financial Advisor, Manager of Customer Experience, and Assistant Branch Manager.

In addition to having my 3rd child, pregnancy and maternity did not prevent my climb up the ladder. I have since distanced myself from those that never believed in me.

I am blessed to be a part of an organization that has provided a level playing field for everyone. In November 2022, I accepted the promotion to the role of Branch Manager. Thank you, TD!!

Finally, Dear Immigrants: seek an organization that will accept your potential and believes in yourself that you can attain whatever height you aim for.

When relocating abroad .surround yourself with positive minded people that will boost your morale in believing in yourself that you can build a professional career and excel not those that will say just do any job to survive .some ppl end up doing jobs like care jobs ,factory &security jobs and say afterall they can still earn good money and pay bills but with time those jobs affect their self esteem and morale and they are unhappy bcs no joy in the kind of jobs they are doing and no inner job satisfaction.Cut off from negative ppl that will tell you it’s hard to get a professional job abroad .

From my day 1 of relocating abroad ,with my very 1st job ,I applied straight into my finance profession field and got a job and I have been advancing. There were hard times i was faced with racism and that’s normal being the only black in my team but my first victory is believing in myself that they are not better than me and I can excel and of course it’s been the gracev&favour of God for me. .so many Nigerians are doing very good professional jobs abroad and also so many Nigerians with masters degree are doing cleaning jobs too . They both earn money but not thesame level and inner satisfaction.how you start goes a long way

Someone did same thing to me, when i was applying for my US VISA she kept on reminding me that i won't get visa, yes everyone knows how hard it is to get American Visa but then, at least be positive, fortunately i went for the interview with my kids and we all got our visa. When i was travelling i never informed her even thou she was supposed to be the first person to know but i didn't even thou she knows how it all started. I hate Negativity so much. I believe so much in positive mindset and it works for me.

I had to keep it to my self too. When I was studying for my exams someone said I should be careful o. That one of his friends passport was seized and he is replacing a prisoner. Can you imagine? BTW. The story was obviously fabricated. Some people and negatively are friends. I decided to play fool and said I won't pursue int. Travel again and they friend said it was a good idea o. Now looking back it's been over 4 years and I can't thank God enough.

This post invalidates the experience of others in the demographic you just mentioned. Your post makes as much sense as Otedola saying there's no poverty in Nigeria because he is a billionaire. Is that fair to all the others who have a different experience? By the way, your spirit aligns with the strongman over Canada. That is why you have no challenges. they consistently reward their own. Even Jesus (Jesus ESPECIALLY) will have challenges in the West, because His spirit is contrary to that of the strongman in control of that region.

BS. What is the big deal? Black foreigners of both genders have been heading even some of the largest banks in the Americas at the corporate level since the 80s or earlier. This is a common branch manager(almost like saying being a Macdonald's manager). If only you knew how irrelevant her story is. This is not even an accomplishment anymore for black or women people. She must be some bush or new immigrant for real. *roll eyes*. For crying out loud, the head of the World bank is a black woman, a Nigerian. Stupid new Canadian immigrant trying to get attention.

Na wa! Bank Branch Manager, is nothing abroad. It is in Naija that it is a prestigious office where they act like mini gods that you all go crazy over. Why would you not make an ordinary branch manager because you are black when black people hold groundbreaking roles worldwide? Abeg flaunts your new office in peace. Nobody said anything!

This job does not pay up to $60k annually, and you are here making this noise. Please, keep quiet and thank God. People at home will think you have arrived and are making good morning. You are setting your family back home up for bad things, God forbid! Be careful

What's unique about this? How many Canadians will celebrate being a bank branch manager in Lagos? Blacks and inferiority complex. Build Nigeria and succeed

So what if you a manager, that does not mean you have immunity, just like the former Twitter manager that was fired anything can happen when you working for someone else we've been there, talking from experience

Aunty, it depends on where you live in Canada. If you live in an immigrant-dominated city, .you are likely to climb the ladder(tho not easy but possible) to become a manager of bank or whatsoever.

And this goes to social media. Nigerians have turned even LinkedIn into a gossip site. Congratulations, but your bringing this to social media is unprofessional.

Shame. Nigerians are celebrating being branch managers in wannabe USA which is Canada, while Indians are CEOs of most top organizations in America

Nigerians and trying to show off to the world!! Sighs, this is not necessary.

They will always play the race card and victim card. Very bad.

This is almost a general notion making waves abroad, everybody will tell you to join the medical field otherwise you won't make it. This is actually not true as there are a lot of thing you can do to make a living. But the only thing is that you don't want to be filling job applications everyday. Most people abroad need job security as their responsibilities are so much considering extended families back home. But the truth is that you can still excel in other fields you only need time and dedication, remain stubbornly focused on your dream career and one day you will see yourself at the top. The difference is that most medical field jobs come in very handy like you almost don't have to search to get them.
