Those dead individuals you were talking about were members of that church before their demise right?
Church gives sense of belonging... church is family oriented and not a corporate organisation.. it mourns with those that mourns and rejoice with those that rejoices.... Does it even matter how many days or months the dead has been in a mortuary?
Taking the dead to the church is to comfort the rest of the family that were alive and remind them of the hope of resurrection... That while they were mourning, they should not do so like those without hope... If they believe, they will see their loved ones again on that resurrection morning that the Bible talked about
Though there's no repentance in the grave... The prayers is for those who were alive..
There are several passages that indicates the praying for the dead.
1. Near the middle of his great reflection on the resurrection, the apostle Paul pauses to ask his readers: “What do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf” (1 Cor. 15:29)?
2. Paul prayed for dead Onesiphorus in 2 Timothy 1:16-18 (RSV): “May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me; he was not ashamed of my chains, [17] but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me eagerly and found me – [18] may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day – and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus.” (cf. 4:19)
3. In James 2:13, “For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.”
Mercy means leniency and compassion shown toward offenders by a person or agency charged with administering justice. Mercy means giving you what you do not deserve. Mercy means unmerited favour, an act of kindness or compassion.
4. That there are sins that are forgiven even in the next life, Jesus said to the Pharisees: Matthew 12:31-32
[31]And so I tell you, every human sin and blasphemy will be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
[32]And anyone who says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but no one who speaks against the Holy Spirit will be forgiven either in this world or in the next.
5. In I Cor.3:11-15 1 Corinthians 3:11-15
[11]For nobody can lay down any other foundation than the one which is there already, namely Jesus Christ.
[12]On this foundation, different people may build in gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay or straw
[13]but each person's handiwork will be shown for what it is. The Day which dawns in fire will make it clear and the fire itself will test the quality of each person's work.
[14]The one whose work stands up to it will be given his wages;
[15]the one whose work is burnt down will suffer the loss of it, though he himself will be saved; he will be saved as someone might expect to be saved from a fire. (Meaning that there's still salvation even when the person doesn't deserve it).

Nothing is more beautiful and touching than attending a Catholic funeral.
From the final commendation, the mass, the incensation of the body etc.
Then, everyone with their dripping Purple colour (purple signifies death in Catholic) matches with the corpse with accompanying gong! gong! bell sound.
For my parish, we use that ancient Roman trolley, and either CMO or CWO or Knight lead the trolley(based on the organisation of the deceased).
Two accorlytes with lit candles, cross bearer and priests. It resembles a scene from Merlin or any other Epic magical movie
Death will just be looking so beautiful and sweet. The Latin responses et all. And you don't want me to be in church when I die?
Besides, the souls that lingers in purgatory needs to be freed.
* That practice has absolutely nothing to do with God this since God's presence does not live in your churches much the same way God's presence never lived inside of Jewish synagogues, even of Old.
* The fate of a dead man is decided as he lives. Contrary to popular belief, you cannot say a last minute prayer before death only to expect to be saved. If one does not infact do works of righteousness while still alive and able to, no amount of predate confessions can save one's soul. You have to do works of righteousness and you have to remain faithful till the end in order to be saved - That is what Jesus Christ said - Matthew 25 vs 31 - 46 & Mark 13 vs 13.
* Your sins will be forgiven you even a blink before death but without righteousness, it is meaningless- Matthew 25 vs 31 - 46. Righteousness is the extra lamp Oil that every bride must have in order to enter into the wedding feast - Matthew 25 vs 1 - 13
Basically, all burial rituals are meaningless when it comes to God and the things of God.
This question is laughable because what is dead is not alive anywhere else.
Death is the opposite of life, the end of it all!
Before we were born, we weren't existing anywhere and when we die, we seize to exist.
Religion needs their followers to believe the afterlife because that's the only way to guarantee the free flow of money to live their luxurious lifestyle.
With constant threat of eternity in hellfire they bend the gullible to do their bidding.

Taking the dead to church and all that are mere religious Exercises Praying for forgiveness after Death is a Complete and comprehensive waste of time and Strength.
Even if the Pope, Bishop , Reverned and Pastors combine together to bury or Pray for forgiveness of a dead person, it has nothing to do with the Eternal destination of the person.
Even if one is buried inside the Church, it means nothing.
Mercy Expires at Death. Immediately Death hits, it is Judgement! It is straight to Either of Heaven or Hell. The opportunity to repent is closed. There is no Repentance in the Grave.
What Matters for us all after Death is if we Believed & accepted JESUS CHRIST as our LORD and SAVIOR.
What matters is if we lived according to HIS Commandments given to us in HIS Word ( The HolyBible)
What matters is if our Names are in the book of life.

I don't attend church, I really want to, But I don't have the zeal to attend Church anymore. They have turned Christianity into a Charade.
Even at my workplace, they see me as queer. But when there is an argument pertaining to the Bible and gospel of Christ, I break it down for them. Even the most religious church goers amongst them are confused about how someone who doesn't attend church is enlightened.
As a Christian, the Bible has everything you need to succeed. People don't just read, especially Africans. One of the reasons most people are converting to other religions is because churches have abandoned the gospel of Jesus Christ and focused on earthly delights and riches.

Well... If it does, they win. If it doesn't, they don't lose. Religion is a practice of ultimate uncertainty. No one knows for sure what is and what is not. People just believe and hope that it is true so they win. If you do it and it is true, you win. If you do it and it is not true, you don't lose. If you don't do it and it is true, you lose. If you don't do it and it is not true, you don't lose and you don't win. The above is called Pascal's Wager. Gathering to pray for the dead before burial also renews the hope of the faithful that the church will be with them even till death.
