This perspective is very wrong. The law in Nigeria allows anyone to use self defence to protect his or herself during any attack or against any possible bodily harm or loss of property. This however requires the use of a reasonable force commensurate with the nature of the attack. Even if this means using anything or defensive weapon to ensure one's own protection and property.

The wider implication of this is that even if in the course of self defence or protecting your property, the adversary loses his or life, you are excused by law for the homicide. Police Spokesman needs some further coaching on the constitutional right of Nigerians to protect themselves and their property.

The CSP says the law doesn't permit individuals to own pepper spray and shocker. There's no law that prohibits or sanctions one in possession same so until the law declares them as illegal people are free to use it as a defensive weapon.
